LA BELLE ECHELLE
  • PROGRAM: Multi-purpose room + protected housing . SIZE: 3000 M2 . LOCATION: Léchelles, CH . CLIENT: Commune de Léchelles . STATUS: Competition . TIME: 2013
  • In order to minimize its impact on the landscape, the project tends to reassemble the asked program into one compact volume and to follow the implantation logic of the existing public infrastructures: sport field, sports bar and communal administration. Along with the “chemin de la place des sports” street, the new building links the main “cantonale” street with the new pedestrian path planned along the “Chandon” stream.
This graveled surface spreads like a topographical carpet in order to join all the project entrances. With built and green intertwining, this gravel surface becomes a diffuse limit with the natural landscape. Downwards on the natural slop, the gravel becomes larger in order to host the needed public parking.
As for the agricultural archetype of barn and housing under a single roof omnipresent on site, all elements of the program are united under a common double pinched roof merging both type of construction: the highest volumes along the “cantonale” street and the lowest volumes towards the green zone.
The double gables profile of the volume is the result of a ‘Boolean’ operation on the program volumes. The building naturally follows the topography and echoes the tilted roof of the neighboring constructions.

  • NOTAN OFFICE is a Brussels based architecture and urban design practice. It relies on temporary associations between Frederic Karam and other architects, landscape architects, artists, urban planners, and more technical advisors. The idea is to adapt to every project that demands different knowhows and expertise; relying on this network to reinvent itself through every collaboration, each project taken from scratch, with new inputs for each contexts in attempts to find coherent answers with given budgets, contexts and geographical locations.
